A flat, smooth engraving area is ideal. Boards with deep knife marks, heavy warping, cracks, uneven live edges or a thick surface coating can be more difficult to engrave consistently. The board should also be clean and free from food residue before it is supplied.

Different timbers react differently to laser engraving. Some produce a dark, high-contrast result, while others create a softer and more subtle mark. Existing oils, stains and coatings can also influence the finished colour.

Suitable artwork and engraving placement are confirmed before production so we can make sure the design works with the usable area of your board.

Choosing the engraving size

Our BYO cutting board engraving service is available in three size ranges:

• Standard: engraving up to 20 cm
• Large: engraving up to 40 cm
• Extra Large: engraving up to 60 cm

These sizes refer to the maximum engraving dimension, not the overall size of the board. A large board with a small corner design may only require the standard option, while a wide central logo or large decorative layout may require one of the larger sizes.

Preparing your artwork

A clear logo, high-resolution image, line drawing or typed wording is the best starting point. When supplying a business logo, an original vector file is ideal, although a clear high-resolution file can often be used.

For personalised wording, include the exact spelling, capitalisation and date format you would like engraved. It is also helpful to indicate whether you prefer the design centred, placed in a corner, aligned near a handle or positioned on a particular side of the board.

If the artwork contains extremely fine lines, shading or small text, it may need to be adjusted so it remains clear when engraved into timber.
